JEDI recognizes small business innovators

By Will Duggan, Mt. Shasta Herald

True to its mission of creating a prosperous business community throughout Siskiyou County, the Jefferson Economic Development Institute honored several businesses for innovation at its annual awards program held Friday night at the Sons of Italy Hall in Weed.

JEDI a nonprofit organization that provides resources for people, businesses and communities to develop opportunities for self-determined livelihoods, healthy organizations and thriving economics.

While all of the 22 nominees were acknowledged for their innovative accomplishments, four received special recognition.

Business representatives at the event expressed appreciation for the assistance JEDI has provided in getting them to where they are today with a shared refrain of, "We could not have made the progress we did without the wide range of practical JEDI services that are available."

The Microenterprise of the Year award went to Furpurrsons Pet Resort, a year-old upscale boarding facility for pets that includes 59 regular suites and 7 luxury suites. Owners Stacey and David Chiment and Laurie King said, "Perseverance and a belief in a dream has made it all come true."

Spring Hill Nursery won the award for Employer of the Year Kattie Jessup has developed a strong and loyal staff that values every contribution made by all employees.

The Siskiyou Opportunity Center garnered the Business with a Social Purpose award. Receiving the award, executive director Steve Rogers said, "Our ultimate goal is to bring dignity, self worth, social inclusion, and personal independence to all of our disabled workers as part of the community."

The Siskiyou Opportunity Center was organized in 1970 to provide work opportunities for developmentally disabled adults. Last year the center served 76 individuals and provided work training at over 25 sites. The workers produce and sell 10 different products and provide Siskiyou County with eight different services.

This year's JEDI Stewardship award went to the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Bureau. Marie Wells and Kathy Andersen oversee the Bureau, which donates five percent of its proceeds from the sales to the Stewardship Fund to help protect recreational areas in the Mount Shasta area. Contributions to the fund help keep the rivers, lakes, trails, meadows, campgrounds and parks clean.

Don Banducci, one of the founders of Yakima multipurpose car racks, gave the keynote address Friday night. He related the story of how he and his two partners pioneered their products over the course of the past 25 years to create what is now a multi-million dollar enterprise.

"We wanted to give the product and company a personality that fits our culture and customer base," Banducci said. "Every business starts with a vision. And we made it work by taking what we do very seriously and trying to take ourselves less so."

JEDI support individuals to become self-employed in the creation of economic stability and financial well being.

Toward that goal JEDI raises awareness as to the effectiveness of microenterprise in Siskiyou County by providing personalized business counseling and a variety of classes and workshops for those who are self employed or wanting to start a new business.

The event was made possible by the support of Aiello Goodrich Teuscher, Alpine Business Equipment, Chitwood Energy Management, Scott Valley Bank, Creative Tent International, Ecowood Display, Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta, Personnel Preference, PremeirWest Bank and Roseburg Forest Products.
