The JEDI Mt. Shasta VITA/TCE Site is located at 205 Chestnut St. in Mt. Shasta.  The Yreka site is located at the Senior Center, 810 North Oregon St. in Yreka. The Drop Off, Pick Up and Intake process for each site is detailed below as well as the 100% Virtual Methods.

The Intake Process

The first step to having your taxes prepared is to complete the Intake Packet and gather the necessary tax documents.

What You Need to Have Your Taxes Prepared

  • Proof of identification – Picture ID for taxpayer and spouse if applicable
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Signed Form 14446, Virtual VITA/TCE Taxpayer Consent (located in the Intake Packet), authorizing the virtual tax preparation process
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
  • 1099 SSA Statement of Benefits
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Broker statements (Forms 1099 B)
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns if new to the JEDI VITA Site
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit or Debit
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number (Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number) if appropriate
  • Information on Health Insurance Coverage Form 1095-A, B, or C
  • Information on all itemized deductions – Schedule A

Mt. Shasta Drop Off and Pick Up

  • The Mt. Shasta Site is located at 205 Chestnut St. in Mt. Shasta
  • The site will open Jan. 31, 2022 and will operate Mon.-Fri. from 9:00-3:00 pm
  • No appointment is necessary
  • Intake Packets are in a receptacle at the back door of the office
  • Return the completed packet to the JEDI office and ring the doorbell at the back door
  • Volunteers will go over the information with you and verify your identity
  • The documents will be scanned and returned to you
  • The return will be prepared remotely
  • Taxpayers will receive a call during the preparation if we need more information. When you receive a call:
    • The volunteer will identify themselves and their name will be on a list given to you in the Intake Packet
    • You will be asked to identify yourself with your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number 
    • It is critical that we have a reliable way to reach you—if your mailbox is full or not setup, you will miss our call and delay the process
    • You will be called when the return is ready
  • Return to the JEDI office to pick up the printed return, review it for accuracy and sign Form 8879, e-File Authorization by taxpayer and spouse if applicable
  • VITA Site e-files return

Yreka Drop Off and Pick Up

  • The Yreka VITA/TCE site is located at 810 N. Oregon in the Senior Center
  •  This site will operate every Friday from 10:00-3:00 pm beginning January 28th, 2022 through April 15th, 2022 
  • Appointments must be made for the Yreka site
    • One appointment for Drop Off and Intake
    • One appointment Pick Up, review and signing
  • Schedule appointments by calling the JEDI Tax Line at 1-888-926-6670 Option 5 
  • The Intake and Pick Up will be person to person

You will need all the documents listed above in What You Need to Have Your Taxes Prepared

  • At Intake, volunteers go over the Intake forms, verify your identity and check for missing documents
  • Documents will be scanned and returned to you
  • Return is prepared remotely and is usually ready the following Friday. You will be called when the return is ready and during the preparation for more information if necessary
  • When you receive a call:
    • Volunteer identifies themselves and their name will be on a list given to you in the Intake Packet
    • You will be asked to identify yourself with your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number 
    • Return at your second appointment to review the tax return and to sign Form 8879, e-File Authorization by taxpayer and spouse if applicable
  • VITA Site e-files return
  •  Taxpayers may be in the Senior Center building with a mask and social distancing 
  • There will be no use of the restrooms

Virtual Tax Preparation Using Digital Technology

There are several options for transferring tax documents using digital technology. Methods that do not include any face-to-face contact will require identity verification using a video call or video teleconferencing. The Customer Portal, a new feature this year, enables the taxpayer to upload their documents, view the completed tax return, correspond with the volunteer and sign Form 8879 electronically.

Customer Portal

  • Request a link from the volunteer
  • Volunteer sends Form 14446, Virtual VITA/TCE Taxpayer Consent and requests copy of photo ID and Social Security card
  • Volunteer receives forms and confirms identity with video call
  • Volunteer sends link by email or text
  • Taxpayer uses link to create a Portal Account
  • Taxpayer can upload the following file types: pdf, png, jpg, tif, doc, docx, xls, xlsx
  • Taxpayer contacted by phone for Intake Interview
  • Return prepared remotely
  • Completed return shared through Portal
  • Volunteer calls taxpayer for Quality Review
  • Taxpayer signs Form 8879, E-File Authorization in the Customer Portal
  • VITA site e-files return

Facilitated Self-Assistance with Taxslayer Fusion

  • TaxSlayer Fusion, free file software provided to the JEDI VITA Site for taxpayers who wish to prepare their own return  
  • Free for Federal and State
  • Request the URL by email or by calling the VITA Tax Line at 888-926-6670 Option 5 for more information and to
  • Create an account in Taxslayer Fusion
  • Set up a Zoom meeting with a Certified VITA volunteer
  • Volunteer guides taxpayer through the return using “screen sharing” in Zoom
  • Taxpayer e-files their return
